@gabrielaperez Yes, I agree with you. I just remember a group of us being assigned nightly to carry bags of trash through the double hatches in pitch darkness. Once on deck, we slowly made our way and walked towards the aft of the ship and threw them overboard. We hung around back there, smoked cigarettes, and swapped jokes and stories. I admit, I'm sure there were restrictions on what was thrown overboard...just wasn't in charge of that area.

I was onboard JOY as E-3 Machinest Mate. Historical ship indeed. 1 of the gun mounts blown off during Viet Nam war & 1st US ship fired upon. Original cook was still on ship when I was on in 1981. BEST FOOD EVER! Joy was definately going downhill though. Always DIW and using the civilian shipyards for engine room repairs. Bacame a McHales navy. Shoulda retired it sooner than 82. Never hit 30 knots when I was on it. Carton of Lucky Strikes was $1 when we anchored away. Trash was dumped in ocean.

Hi there and thanks for taking the time to comment and to describe in a nutshell your experience working aboard of that exciting boat. When you said that "trash was dumped in ocean", you mean all trash? I imagine there was no time or space to store it in huge containers to later dispose it properly, right? But I do think that those type of boats nowadays dispose their trash properly, right? There should be some type of regulations for then to do so. Blessings! ;)

Great video! I was Gunnery Officer on Turner Joy from 76-78 and Communications Officer from 78-80. Only comment is that destroying torpedo boats was a very small part of TJ's mission. she was primarily a shore bombardment and air defense vessel with an anti-submarine capability, as well.

@shultheisshack Hi there! Thanks for taking the time to write. Wow! Lucky you having worked on the ship. Ah, now I know what the main duties of the ship were and not only destroying torpedo boats. Thanks for the info. Blessings. ;)
