The explorer moves around using two motors for locomotion and an ultra sonic sensor. When it approaches a wall, it halts, looks around and tries to choose the direction with the greatest amount of space. It also has a front bumper linked to a touch sensor so that should it fail to detect an obstacle, it stops, reverses and chooses another direction. It usually detects solid objects without problems but it has a hard time detection narrow obstacles like chair legs, low object like books or walls which are far from being perpendicular to the robots path. That's where the bumper comes in. I found the instructions and program for this model here: http://www.nxtprograms.com/NXT2/explorer/index.html
