for those of you with questions about how it heats the water, if you have a 29 gallon fish tank and a 10 gallon sump, you effectively are heating a 39 gallon tank and should buy a heater to fit your application. Since the water is constantly moving, it's more like having one tank, therefore, it doesnt matter where the heater is.

Very good information. I'm going to try these techniques myself!

@espirates2 You would be surprised how fast an aquarium heater heats water. Just think about something. Say you have a 50 gallon tank, there are approx 190L of water per 50 gallons. Now say your sump moves 400L per Hour. basically every 30 minutes your water will have made it from inside of the tank, through the sump and back into the tank. in 24 hours it will have done that 48 times approx. Not to mention the average ambient temp in a house is 70.

nice work there and thanks for sharing,

I don't get how having a heater in the sump can heat not only the water going through but also the water in the main tank. It doesn't heat the water that fast does it ?

@espirates2 No it doesn't heat the water fast. I just got a true temp. heater for my 75 gal tank and i have the probe in the main tank about half way from the bottom and the heater is in my sump . Putting the heater in the sump is just a good way to hide the heater

If you were worried about using a so called aquarium safe cilicone then why did you use black cilicone which is obviously not aquarium cilicone?
