From the north rim of Chaco Canyon, we gazed down a thousand years past at one of the largest assembly of ancient pueblo ruins in the country.

Between the years AD 900 and 1150, Chaco Canyon - in what is now northwestern New Mexico - was a major center of ancestral Puebloan culture. A thriving culture which included an understanding of complex architecture, community life, social organization, astronomy, and commerce.

The half-moon shaped Pueblo Bonito "beautiful village" is one of the most impressive of all the pueblos in this scenic and spectacular high-desert kingdom.

Echoes of the ancient ones resounded around us, records of their existence written on stone and in the intricacy of their architecture.
