Carey Beebe stripping soft black cloth to width for the jackrail padding.

Harpsichords require various action cloths and some means of stripping them to desired width. A purpose-built cutting board with a self-healing mat and material stop is used. A selection of MDF straight edges of various widths (3mm, 5mm, 8mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm & 25mm) can be used singly or in combination, enabling cloth to be quickly and consistently stripped to many different widths for whatever purpose.

Here, soft black cashmere is being stripped to 18mm for jackrail padding. (Three layers are normally used for each choir, and the cloth will eventually be attached to the underside of the jackrail by 3/8˝ nails.) The bolt of cloth is unrolled and the edge pushed flush against the material stop. The 18mm straight edge both holds the cloth against the stop and is used as the cutting guide. A single-edge razor blade cuts through the cloth in one pass, and the material rearranged against the stop for the next strip to be cut.
