I agree with arkady39. I have no fu’king idea where the ignorant “get her number quickly and pull out” myth came from except, maybe, from guys really to chicken to immediately take things further – particularly when there’s chemistry there? Those “number guys” aren’t true players – they’re diddlers. So you can instead ask her out for a coffee, or whatever, on the spot and certainly try to spend as much time as you can with her.

As he says, it it important to spend enough time to both sell yourself and do your homework.
However, I would advise against spending too much time with any one woman unless you are on a sure-fire winner. The worst you can do is labour for half the night over a phone number. Even if she appears keen, if that number isn't forthcoming, it's time to move on. After you get her number, move on after a few minutes. Always leave the crowd hungry for more!

He forgot to mention that it is always good to hang around for a few minutes after getting her number. Don't just get he number and take take off immediately.
To me a phone number is designed to say this "We are having a great time. Let's continue this at a different time and place."
