When cable TV shows like "The Sopranos" and "Oz" cleaned up at the Emmy Awards, network shows like "Law & Order" and "CSI" added darker storylines "ripped from the headlines" and spiced up the characters portrayals and backgrounds in order to compete with cable. Then new shows focusing on sex & violence became the norm. Why would comic writers & artists ignore this trend, especially with TV writers becoming comic book writers as well?
