This song is posted in honor of Black History Month. It was written by James Weldon Johnson (Words) and John Rosamond Johnson (Music). They were two brothers. Google the song title to find out the history behind OUR song.

I played it slower this time.

Everyone, especially Black people, NEED to learn this song. I am ashamed when I go places and someone who sing s this forgets the words, don't know the words or don't honor the song by standing. So here are the words:

Verse 1
Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Verse 2
Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet,
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered;
Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

Verse 3
God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,
Thou Who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee.
Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee.
Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand,
True to our God, true to our native land.

Enjoy and Be Blessed!!!

  • Excuse me, But Blacks, whites, hispanics, we all live in one Nation. There should be only one National Anthem and that is been around for years.

  • @Tom6093 The purpose of this is to tell the struggles of African-Americans in America (mostly during slavery and post-slavery years). It is never meant to undermine the purpose of the Star Spangled Banner.

  • @jamminondakeys IT'S practically 2011. Most well educated people who are rational aren't racist. Yes....There is still a lot of it around, but most of us think it's lame. I get so tired of this whole thing about reminding us about what you have been through. GIVE IT UP !!!!! YOU HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS WE DO and if someane is racist, it's because they were raised wrong. To me, There is no color. We are from the same planet. We all have hearts, minds, and souls and have dreams.

  • @Tom6093 First, most of the spirituals from that era were original and not rewritten. Secondly, It is important to remind everyone of our past because it helps in appreciating our present and future. If I never knew the struggles of the past, I would take a lot of privileges I enjoy for granted. Likewise, if we don't hear about what happened, we are doomed to repeat it in some form or fashion. Lastly, the "hood/gangsta" persona is not just among blacks and it was never great, in my opinion.

  • i have 2 sing this song 4 graduation in3dayz but idk the second verse

  • Respond to this video... Your post brought tears to my eyes..... round of applause to you

  • @jamminondakeys Well said my friend

  • I just read the lyrics to the song. I'M SORRY !!!!!

  • @Tom6093 Maybe you should read up on why this song even exists. Segregation was legal in 1900, and white America didn't really care for black America and vice-versa, so we made our own national anthem.

    And if you don't like it, stop watching it.

  • @JaylonCmm23 ok but that doesnt mean we cant make it for this special thing to us

  • This is only about history and we should be proud and remember we are on the same side... "The Human Side". My son was murdered because of this non-sense. Why are there so many hater's of all kinds in America - of all places? 2011 or not, I think if you try to stop us from even mentioning it you are just as much a hater as the rest. Everyone can talk about the civil war and other things without being dissed! I only think it is wrong to keep holding a grudge or living in a pity party.

  • @The123joend  O.K.

  • @Tom6093 your ignorant beyond belief and i don't care if this comment is a year old.

  • @jamminondakeys Excuse me, but this is MY National Anthem. You can keep the WHITE NATIONAL ANTHEM, known as the Star Spangled Banner, which I do NOT sing, nor WILL I.

  • I was reading the long back and forth comments on here and it is just annoying. Like what does it matter if there is an anthem seperate from the national one? It is okay to have something different. As for the people who say you don't see color then what is the problem with having a black anthem? If color doesn't bother you then why is it coming off as if you are complaining about blacks having their own anthem!???????????
