Actually, if you read the history of Kalimpong you will see that it belonged to Bhutan, not Nepal. And, yes, the British made arrangements to have this land from the Bhutanese and there was an exchange made with Bhutan for this location due to the favourable climate, which apealed to the brits in the summer heat of the then capital Calcutta. This also was tied to the rest of the World acknowledging Bhutan's Soverinty from India.
