Thinking 101: Capital Punishment

Taking the life of a murderer doesn't return the life he took. It is not redress for a wrong, it is merely revenge. Do we want to base our system of justice on revenge? If so, not the state, but the families of the victims should carry out the sentence. Vendetta at least makes some kind of sense.

But suppose, now, that you've got the wrong man. If you kill him and THEN find out he wasn't guilty, can you bring him back, and say, "Hey, sorry, man, we really thought you did it!"

This conversation is really helping me put some perspective on the whole issue. My mind is changing for sure.

Previously, I would have dismissed your "got the wrong man" argument as relatively improbable and just a byproduct of an imperfect system. Now I am starting to really see the relevance.

Another..a nd very simple argument... Have you ever heard the term "Do as i say, not what i do"? We all know how well that works, and quite simply, a country that murders its own siticens, sends a bright clear message that killing people is ok. It really is that simple... If your society holds a low value of human life, this will be reflected in the murder rates.

I agree with you...Norway is such an exception to the rule, however. Honestly, it is the best place I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. But the US is in pretty deep on this stuff, and neo-conservatism is like a plague here. You do also have to realize the vast population differences between the countries. I wish we could run our systems the way you do.

@Headhunter004 I know they dont only kill the guilty, although ideally they would. The innocent deaths are just the sad sacrifice that has to be made to make sure all the guilty ones get disposed of.

Also, nothing happens to those involved in a wrongful execution because it is the state that takes the responsability for the death, from the moment the death sentance is issued. What are you going to do execute the state?

@th0rium232 and I can show you dozens of cases where INNOCENT people have PROVEN to be executed (many on purpose even, through deliberate misconduct by the prosecutors and such), but we don't see the state officials involved in that wrongful taking of life being strapped and poisoned, now do we? Or ANY time the state fudges for that matter (even purposefully)? HUGE disconnect there.

And do you honestly expect the GOVERNMENT to accurately execute its citizens (as in, ONLY kill "guilty ones")?

Are you sure the person you are about to execute is guilty of the crime they are being charged with? Simple question, why is the American Bar Association against capital punishment? Research...

its actually around $500,000 for someone to be in jail for life and being on death row is $1-7 million so get your facts right
