The challenge of cancer in the world in an era of globalization
presented by Annie J. Sasco, M.D., Dr.Ph., M.P.H.
Dr. Sasco was trained as an M.D. with several postgraduate degrees in public and occupational health, as well as sociology and aeronautical medicine in Bordeaux and Toulouse, France. She then went on to the Harvard School of Public Health, where she got a Master of Public Health, a Master of Science in Biostatistics and Epidemiology and a Doctor of Public Health in Epidemiology; for a few years she was a Teaching Fellow at Harvard University.
She has been a researcher and then Director of Research at the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (Inserm or French NIH) since 1980. She spent most of her career in Lyon, France, where she worked for 22 years at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), including 9 years as Group Leader and then Unit Chief of Epidemiology for Cancer Prevention, and two years as Acting Chief of the Programme for Cancer Control of the World Health Organization (WHO).
She also held visiting professorship appointments at the Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, the University of Illinois in Chicago, and the Faculty of Veterinarian Medicine and Zootechny, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. She returned to Bordeaux University in 2006, where she headed the team of Epidemiology for Cancer Prevention, before joining the team of HIV, Cancer and Global Health within the Inserm Research Center of Epidemiology and Biostatistics this year.
Her current research focuses on cancer in countries of the South, with a deep research interest in the interaction between biological agents (viruses, bacteria and parasites) and behavioral and environmental risk factors for cancer. She concentrates on cancers affecting women and on equal opportunity health care access.
