The British composer Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) is remembered internationally for the series of operettas he wrote with WS Gilbert ('The Mikado' 'The Pirates of Penzance' and others) but he wrote in other forms, including a few piano and chamber works. This piece, from 1868, was dedicated to his love interest Rachel Scott Russell. It is an attractive song without words which evokes tolling bells (the angelus?) at the end of each 'verse'. The piece sometimes appears on the ABRSM Grade 7 piano syllabus and, for that reason, is probably Sullivan's best-known piano work.

  • I like the fact that you do "unknown" and unappreciated pieces. I would love to know if there is a piano arrangement of a slow piece by Malcolm Arnold from his Little Suite for Brass 2nd movt

    125s

  • @pinkharrier47 Thanks. I don't know about the Arnold. However, I do often play an arrangement for violin and piano of one of the four Scottish Dances which is on a current exam syllabus!

  • Great choice and a wonderful introduction to the "other side" of Sullivan.

  • @pinkharrier47 Thanks - I'm glad you liked it!

  • Why is so much of Arthur Sullivan's non-operetta music ignored? I never heard this before and there is much more I never heard.

  • @verdew8181 That's a very pertinent question!
