@vitellia Clearly ... maybe in years cause she was 58, but in her voice, I don´t think so. She sounds spectacular for her age. So, "clearly past her time" here doesn´t apply and I´m not a Varady´s fan. Just that I completely disagree with your comment. But definitely, a superb singer.

Das ist eine sensationelle Aufnahme dieser extrem schwierigen Arie. Ich denke , da0 nur Elisabeth Schwarzkopf eine ähnlich großartige Aufnahme sang. Wunderbar, was Julia Varady und auch Orchester und Fischer-Dieskau als Dirigent hier vollbrachten. Danke!!!!!

Incredable.If she retired in 1998,than this was her final year on stage?
Born sept. 1941 makes her 57 years here,so even more admirable
Someone called this "past her prime",in years yes,in voice she is still "full swinging" to use a non-classical term! And her acting is "unique",certainly a singer-actress.I notice I almost forget to breath when watching her! An enormous plus is that you recognize her voice and acting out of hundreds of others;that alone is an enormous achievement.

Clearly past her prime at the time of this performance, but still far superior than any Fiordiligis at their prime. Seriously, Varady makes Kiri Te Kanawa sound like a joke. Just a remarkable voice in a supreme artist. Her Fiordiligi and Vitellia have yet to be surpassed. Only Carol Vaness came close.
