Kevin Stepanuk, associate general counsel of Exelon Corporation/PECO in Philadelphia, won the prestigious Exelon "Energy for the Community" Volunteer Award for 2011. At a ceremony held on May 4, Stepanuk presented the $10,000 donation made in his honor to the Philadelphia Bar Foundation, represented by its president, Wendy Beetlestone. The Bar Foundation will use the funds to support a network of 35 public interest organizations that provide civil legal services to people who need an attorney but cannot afford one.
As Exelon's pro bono coordinator from 2005 to 2008, Stepanuk increased the number of employees donating pro bono services to local non-profit legal organizations including programs organized by Bar Foundation-funded organizations such as Philadelphia VIP's Corporate Pro Bono Day and legal clinics with the Senior Law and Homeless Advocacy Project. Stepanuk personally set an example by leading the regional legal office in the number of pro bono hours served in 2010. The Exelon/PECO Legal Department received the Philadelphia Bar Foundation's Pro Bono Award in 2008, the first time the award was given to a corporate legal department.
