Way back in 1997 when the very first X-Games was held in Big Bear, California; there was an odd event known as Super-Modified Shovel Racing. Essentially it was a combination of downhill sledding and drag racing, using custom-built "shovels" equipped with roll cages and full body harnesses which could hit speeds exceeding 70 miles per hour. Shovel racing only lasted two years in the X-Games, as a series of brutal crashes made the event extremely dangerous. Angel Fire resort held shovel racing competitions until 2005. Footage of the competition is hard to find nowadays; this compilation highlights many of the wipeouts seen during the event. Some riders sustained severe injuries in these crashes.

  • I was there in Big Bear and I saw the crash that starts at 1:37. I couldn't believe the guy wasn't killed. Note the change of direction in the spin.

  • My god, I feel so sorry for that guitar! It probably wants to take a shower after being abused and tortured like that.

  • this video was kinda cool to watch until that last crash, with the guys leg out. thats just horrible :/

  • any of you clowns ever think of incorperating some kind of steering device ?

  • Great footage!!!

  • I remember watching these guys and wondering why they used downhill skis with sidecut as I had seen it on a camera mounted under the sled. I would have gone for the snowmobile style ski with a skag, once it got sideways it would have been my friend, instead of my demise. I believe the sport would still be around if they went that route. I hope all the guys healed, I recall some terrible crashes, but the X games loves capitalizing on human suffering while paying nothing.
