A remake of Bubble Bobble on the Amstrad CPC! Special Preview!

A classic arcade game gets a poor conversion to the Amstrad - a familiar story. Well one guy called Cesar (from CNGSoft - maker of the CPCE emulator) decided he would put things right and remake it from the ground up! Here we have a special preview of his work in progress which is nearly complete - remember guys this is an un-finished Beta version so there's more to be added and improved (points and scoring, bubbles that can be pushed, riding the water, bonus's and the rest of the powerups).

The goal here is not to get the ultimate 8-bit version of the game, but something as close to the arcade original as is feasibly possible in 64k of memory - and something at least comparable to the other conversions. Cesar's priorities was to fit this into a single load, in 64k of memory so normal CPC464 machines can play it, utilise the full 16 colours available in the Amstrad palette, full music and sound effects, all the levels and final boss etc! As Cesar said himself to me - if the C64 got the full game with 100 rounds, final boss, music, etc. why couldn't the CPC464? And that is the simple goal here! Not so simple is coding everything from scratch including the graphics and the music!

ENJOY!!!

  • Thanks for the review! Amazing!!!

  • @realTFM Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed :)

  • I was watching this going "yeah, this is a massive improvement" right up until you said "You will be able to push bubbles around the screen"

    ...

WHY?! That was the one thing the Amstrad game had over every other version, it's why I only play the Amstrad version because I can't stand the fact you can't pop bubbles by jumping into them face first on the other versions, while in the Amstrad there's no messing about trying to pop bubbles.

  • @lorddavid3dxw I get what you mean, and yes I actually prefer that! But the pushing bubbles is what happens in the arcade original and the goal is to get it as close as possible to that. Maybe Cesar could implement a hidden menu to tweak gameplay settings - perhaps on a 128k version? Who knows :)

  • When i was young i love the amstrad cpc ! lol

  • @ivankaiser You can still love it now today! So many great games and remakes being made right now :)

  • It's a pity the flicker, perhaps it is due to the emulator.

  • Now fully released.

  • Thats looking great, I'm a massive Bubble Bobble Fan.

  • Am I right in remembering Bub in the Amstrad version being Red?

  • Is this a plus only game or will it work on stock CPC's?

  • Hmmm, I'm not sure about this one to be honest, yeah its notably improved, but 20 more years of programming experience (and i'd imagine better compression methods), and infinite development time (whilst the original probably had a short deadline) don't seem to have made that huge of a difference, in-game music, and bigger sprites seem to be the main things, with minor flickering a new addition.

I'd love it if optimal versions for all three machines were made now so they could all be compared.

  • I love when CPC finds justice over those poor conversions and lazy spectrum ports.

I can't wait to see the final version.

    Hail Cesar !

  • @Xyphoe I've looked everywhere really, there would at least be a pic of the box on Google Images as well, nothing.

I also found out it was never released in arcades!

  • Just found your channel and i really like your review/longplay vids.

The Amstrad deserves a lot more attention so keep the vids coming!

  • @Xyphoe When is this going to be released Xyphoe brother?
