During the winter of 2004, a great eruptive migration of norther owl species occurred in North America, due to a crash in prey populations. Several of us from the University of Wisconsin spent time trapping and banding these owls to further research efforts. This video documents trapping of great gray owls near Duluth, MN.

  • The mice were set on the ground loose (no tether or trap). Generally, the mouse was unharmed because the owl was surprised by the net coming down on them and they never grabbed it. However, there was a rare occurrence when the mouse ran away from the netter and was grabbed out of reach of the biologist.

  • Speaking of getting away, didn't the little rodent guys want to get away from under the trap? Or were their little legs ties to wee stakes in the ground?

Oh, and the GGOs actually get a meal out of the deal?

  • @JimmyJoeLard There is no trap here, just a net held by hand. The mouse was not restrained by anything.

Sometimes the owls got food, but usually by accident. We try not to teach them that people bring food.

  • Great video! thanks for sharing that. What a cool looking owl. And they were brave to not use gloves. Love the owl ice cream cone : )

  • Cool video. I remember seeing a snowy owl just north of Foley, Mn during their migration when I was a kid....I was clutching my little.22 pretty tight, the dammed thing scared the hell out of me but he sure was beautiful. He was the one and only snowy I've ever seen in the wild.
