Misty Mountain by Rob Paynter

I wrote this in July 1986 after an incredible three weeks of hiking in South Africa. The first three verses were inspired by the Drakensberg mountains and the last three after hiking the Wild Coast from Port St John to Coffee Bay. I did not have any photo of the Wild Coast so have replaced them with photos of some pony trekking we did in Lesotho - a small country within South Africa. Photos by Rob and June Paynter.

Misty Mountain, fading blue
Early sunlight touching you
And the grass so damp with dew
Crisp air makes me think anew.

Staring out over open space
Feel the wind now caress your face
As the clouds the mountains embrace
I'm filled with the peace of this place.

The view is clear the snow is thick
Sky is blue, the light mecuric
In this winter landscape anacoustic
My body filled with mountain music.

On the beach the children play
They don't worry what time of day
As you and I look out to sea
In a land of hills and poverty.

Body black, body white
Light of day, dark of night
Maybe I'm wrong, maybe you're right
'Cause there's something in a simple way of life.

Fire light, fire glow
Don't ask me now 'cause I don't know
The future of our land
Fading footprints in the sand.
