Nelson Mandela attend FW De Klerk's 70th birthday party at Mount Nelson in Cape Town - 18 March 2006

Cape Town's venerable Mount Nelson hotel played host to the 70th birthday party of former president of South Africa, FW De Klerk. Nelson Mandela, who rarely travels out of Johannesburg, was the surprise guest of honour. The 200 guests represented the full spectrum of the new South Africa: ANC leaders, former apartheid cabinet ministers, leading white businessmen and ex-Robben Island prisoners, including the governor of the reserve Bank, Tito Mboweni, and the country's first black billionaire, Tokyo Sexwale. Also present was former Archbishop of Cape Town, Desmond Tutu.

FW was a bigger hero than Mandela in that he had allot to lose and nothing to gain in allowing the reforms. In fact a reformer such as Prof. Heyns paid for it with his life.

As South Africans we should stand together and be grateful that by Gods grace and divine intervention we never saw a civil war,it would have made Rwanda look silly.

FW did what was right for the whites and the country as a whole, the winds of change were there.

My granddad was in Bomber Command during the war & very proud of it. However, in my bolshie youth phase (roughly 16-23) I would say he was a ‘war criminal’ for killing German civilians.

At his 70th birthday we had a garden party at our house & I decided it would be funny to drop an old TV onto proceedings from a skylight roof window- to “see how he liked being bombed without warning”. It injured 3 guests (one permanently scarred) & my granddad never spoke to me again- he died 5yrs later.

Mandela is a good man, now what you see happening in this party , is what Mandela always wanted, to live together in peace and harmony, not to opress one onother, equally opportunitiest. now His fellowers instead of continuing to do the same things amongst the people, they dont care , they are busy enriching themsevels and fighting for power now, poverty, crime, corruption. higher unemployment and racism in the country is getting worse.THE BETRAYAL!
