Taiwan and its people: Ruled by china for centuries during the dynastic era, then gets colonised by the japs and ruled again for a few decades. Japan surrenders, then the Taiwanese gets ruled by the fleeing KMT from the mainland for another 5 decades. Doesn't seem to be independent in any era to me.
