First successful test of my Singing Tesla Coil. Resonance frequency is at 1.092 MHz. The RF is generated with a Class-E MOSFET stage with controllable Frequency.
The sound is modulated on the gate signal of the MOSFET via PWM. The sound is then emitted by the arc itself. Excitation and PWM Frequencies are set with DDS generators controlled via a Microcontroller board with USB interface. The sound comes directly from the soundcard of the PC. All the Hardware and the Software is (c) by me ;-)

  • would this be hearable on a am radio on that frequentie,

becouse of al the elecktromagnatic fields it create's?

that is some nice sound :P

  • thanks.. yes sure an AM radio receives the Audio but the signal is quite low, because the cage blocks most of the EM field.. I'm a ham radio operator so low EMI was a big point while designing the coil.

  • nice tesla coil

i am currently working on a 4mhz plasma speaker tesla coil using common parts (no exotic parts involved )

if you want to improve spark length (music is louder) try to increase secondary/primary coupling !

    i got about 6cm arcs off 100V !

dont use a flat primary coil , wind your primay direct onto a piece of PVC pipe

  • thanks for the info! I already planned to try the tighter coupling as the next step. On the first try I wanted to be sure that the load on the coil doesn't change the load of the transistor and destroy it. I'll work on the coil after a public demonstration in two weeks... and post the results here :-)

  • if you want to be extra carefull you could use a current transformer

wind a single turn on a ferrit core (can be for example yozr primary coil wire).for secondary you can use for example 100 turns

so current ist stepped down 100 times

now you can use a shunt resistor which makes it possible to measure the current using your oscilloscope

i used one on my big solid state tesla coil (mosfet halfbridge running on 500khz , so far 18cm output form a 21cm high coil) and blasted no fets so fare

  • i can also get a current probe from my company for testing that ;-) aber sagmal.. warum schreib ich eigentlich englisch.. hab grad deinen User angeklickt ;-) dadurch dass ich eine class-e stufe hab, kann man sehr schön an der kurvenform sehen, ob die anpassung stimmt und wie sich der transistor gerade fühlt...

  • That's what I call being fully equiped!

  • how loud does it get?

  • Now what i would like to see you produce with your Plasma speaker is some Bass. Great you have accomplished trebal. But it would be more of an achievment with some low notes.

  • the sound is really clear one of the better plasma speakers i've heard

  • hey dude, that sure is inpressive and the sound is super loud!

  • lol excellent. why dont you team up with timetec and release the ultimate plasma / tesla coil speaker set ?

  • There's no such thing as a perfectly working airplane. In fact, a few weeks ago, I had to jump out of one half way through the trip up to altitude due to an aircraft emergency. Besides, I can't resist jumping when I see the door open. hehe I'll probably end up making a solid state tesla coil at some point though because I am majoring in Computer Science and Computer Engineering so this stuff interests me.

  • :D
