She knew her mom wasn't watching the time. It was five now, and she was still in school. Sitting in the hallway. Staring dead at the locker straight ahead of her. She had to leave. But she didn't want to. Anya sat next to her. They remained quiet, because besides saying things to teachers, Melissa hadn't said a word. She hadn't even smiled.

She picked up her bag. "Anya, I'm gonna go."

"Your mom's here?"

She shook her head. "I'm walking." Her voice was still in whispers.

"What? You told me you live 15 or 20 minutes away by car."

She nodded.

"You're not walking. Your legs will fall off."

"I don't mind. It's fine."

She looked at her and said okay. "I'm walking too. So let's go."

Anya turned the corner since her house was there. Melissa crossed the street and started her walk home. She didn't even think about how far it was, she just walked.

Matt was on the block, waiting for his bus. He noticed that she didn't realize he was there.

He stepped in front of her. "Hey Melissa."

She just looked at him.

"What's wrong with you? You've been gloomy all day. What's wrong?"

She just shook her head. "I'm fine."

"Where are you going?"

"Home."

"You live near me right?"

She nodded.

"Why aren't you taking the bus?"

"No metrocard. I don't know how."

"You're gonna walk all the way there?"

She nodded.

"Then I'm walking with you."

"Take the bus, you need to be home." She looked down.

"No, don't worry. I'm not letting you walk alone. It's not that safe of an area."

She knew she couldn't talk him out of it, so she let him walk with her. She didn't say anything. He kept saying things.

"That always makes you laugh, Melissa. Always."

She shrugged.

"What's wrong with you?! I hate knowing that you're not okay!" He stopped her at the corner. He had to walk the opposite way, but he didn't want to leave her.

She looked into his eyes. Her eyes got full. "Nothing. Just nothing."
___

"Ready to go, Mel?" Her mom came in dragging her old suitcase behind her.

Melissa swung her duffel bag over her shoulder and nodded.

Next stop, my home.
