I think this song is about the stories we hear and create when we are kids and how they shape who we are and become real to us, but then to 'grow up' we are supposed to leave them all behind and enter the 'real world' and ignore the imaginary people in the small town in our minds who've made the us into who we are. I think the moon is metaphorical for a the smaller imaginary world that orbits the real one and makes it the way it is just as the real moon does with earth through tides and things.
