    I read somewhere that De Niro listened to tape recordings of mid-western soldiers to find an accent suitable for the role. So he probably intentionally avoided a strong New York accent in this film.

    i love Scorsese for his mafia films and i gotta say Goodfellas and Casino were good, but films like Mean Streets, Raging Bull and especially Taxi Driver... wow... they just touch you really deeply! And DeNiro! what an actor! those films are masterpieces!
