FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE LONDON NAVIGATOR BUS HERE: http://www.jamiemartindesign.co.uk/London_Navigator.html

This is the video I prepared for a presentation evening at the London Transport Museum on 18th March 2009. The "New Bus For London" competition winners were invited to reveal to the public how they arrived at their final design proposals.

The competition was launched by London mayor Boris Johnson in summer 2008 to create a replacement for the classic Routemaster bus. It closed in September 2008, and winners were invited to an awards ceremony in Westminster on 19th December 2008. I was delighted to be awarded joint second place, behind winners Aston Martin and Copoco, and received £10,000. More information can be found at TFL: http://tinyurl.com/48c2u7

  • Did you get the contract?

  • @edwardmonckton No, I was awarded joint second position in the original competition, winning £10,000.

  • glad to see they're KIND OF working the old design back in, However i do feel cheated that Borris said he'd bring the old busses back, as that's what tourists want to see, and he brought in bendy busses... I still don't know why they don't do the same as what they did to the taxis, same design, just use different engines and use fibre glass..

  • @ROFLyouramarshmallow This isn't the final design. I was awarded joint second place in the original competition with this design. Aston Martin/Foster & Copoco were awarded joint first position. But the final bus revealed on 17/5/10 is only loosely reminiscent of the Aston Martin/Foster design.

  • Wrightbus has been chosen as the preferred manufacturer to build new hybrid Routemasters.

  • I think you should of won but you should be proud, even though you didn't win!!!!

I must say, the winning design is a bit plain but you have to admit, it is not bad.

  • Sorry chap but there is nothing unique to London about a half cab bus with an open platform they were all like this years ago, the only unique thing to London was the fact that this old design lasted longer in London. Other towns and cities moved on to moderner desings.

  • I like this design more than the final design, however:

    - The back turning barrier defeats the object of quick open boarding

    - It's got a very long wheelbase, making it very limited in manoeuvring

    - There should be an automatic wheelchair ramp button to allow passengers to press it and get on, rather than (potentially hopelessly) trying to get the drivers attention

  • I'm from New York City, and I truly love this design!!! I've always been a fan of the Routemaster!!!

  • @MarvinDepressedRobot Thats how LT want it.

  • It looks far too good to be allowed anywhere near some of London's Streets. Those plush interiors wouldn't last 5 mins!

But wouldn't the technology used within the bus would have a too higher price tag within these economic times?

Nevertheless, what a good insight to the bus both inside and out.

Of course, the much loved Routemaster could never be replaceed. Too much nostalgic character, etc. That distinct smell inside. Nice wind-down windows and a long cord to ring the bell. DING DING.

  • This isn't the winner, fine, but the winner is just as bad! What a depressing country!

  • LOUSY DESIGN. & why the bright yellow handrails? Bus drivers mention the reflection in the front window, it impedes their view - they get used to it, they say - but why BRIGHT BLOODY YELLOW? The interior just looks cheap & nasty, no improvement!

This country can't design anything nice. Public money down the drain, enriching the few. No one even bothers to ask the bus drivers what makes a safe bus for them & hence also safe for passengers & pedestrians.

About as attractive as a cream bun!

  • dey should use dis one to

  • no no no the front needs to be similar to the original
