they revised that too 'people beat their feet' later on

Actually, its darkies beat their feet. I dont think about race when I hear music. Anyway, this is a different version than my Victor record.

Despite the lyrics this is one of the finest songs that Bix worked, you can hear him just owning that song. What a master! I gave a copy of this song to my 85 year old grandfather and he got the biggest smile, even after all these years he remembers all the lyrics to these songs!

My Grandmother taught me this song when I was like 3 or 4.We did a dance together. She told me the original lyric was "when the n&99@rs beat their feet..." But she told me never to say that word, because it was bad. This was in NYC, and my Grandmother was the head of a Buddhist institute, and was not at all a bigot. It was just a hit song from her younger days,& times were different in the '20's,& singing those bigot words was the norm, I guess,& viewed as "nothing personal." Well...

the lyrics are indeed racist, but musically this piece is first rate...Bix Beiderbecke just rips it on the cornet...great recording.

Great tune! You beat me to posting it. lol

I can't claim to know how the term "darkies" was viewed back then. Even little Shirley Temple did a song (Swing Me An Old Fashioned Song) that contained the word "darkies" in the lyrics. I don't think she was a racist. It was just different times then. The one thing I do know for certain is that the music community was probably the least racist group around back then. The artists respected, admired, and emulated each other regardless of race. They played together whenever possible.
