Tick TICK TICK KNOCK CLACK TICK just doesn't sound right to me for only 56,000km on a BOSS 260 5.4 Litre V8.. has been making this noise only when warm since the day I bought it with 49,000km on it. It's a factory defect that affects some of the 03/04 model BOSS heads and the cobra mustangs in the states due to cooling passages being too narrow, therefore warping and flogging out the Valve Guides mainly only ever on the LH bank but in my case both Heads had this issue, LH was far worse though.
see my comment below about the fix for this problem.

  • The cause of this noise was flogged out valved guides due to a factory defect in some of the 03/04 BOSS heads (mainly the LH bank only, but in my case both!).. - Cooling passages were too narrow but were revised in 2005. The final fix so far (need to rack up a few km on it yet but so far so good) for it after 1 repair that lasted less than 2000km is to get all the guides replaced with fords inline 6 cyclinder guides. I'm told FPV recommends this as the guides in the 6 have never had issues.

  • they all do at the start tap tap big thing is running the right sort of oil which i found helped mine

  • Hi mate, thanks for your reply, I've just had it looked at for the 3rd time, this time by Kloster Ford FPV specialists and they said it was normal BOSS engine noise and that they are a noisy motor compared to the old push rod V8s, he even said feel free to listen to any XR8 we have on the yard and it will sound the same.. What oil do you use?

  • I had knocking noise in my engine at only 75,000kms. Took it straight to Herrod Motorsport and was then shown metal shavings in the sump. Had problems with the oil pump & timing gear.

Had it rebuilt, Run it on Royal Purple oil and 98 Ron fuel from that point on and it never missed a beat.

Ford should really have fixed these engines up after the 1st series!!

  • @FPVXR8ED

    L O FUCKING L

Learn more about oil before you open your mouth again, you think it's the best becuase it says so on tv in the ad?

  • ha ha ohhhh what a crack up! The blokes engine is slapping its head off, and you say, "Yes the noise is normal!!". You are dangerous!

  • Who told you that.

  • i dont use anything but castral edge the best oil u can buy!!

  • i have been using shell helix ultra since 03 ...havnt had any probs ,but yes th noise is normal

  • I just bought a XR8 BA MK2 and it sounds similar to that. I've only got 35,000km on the clock. I was gonna try Shell Helix Ultra in a few days when I get a chance because the Ford Dealer used Castrol Oil.

  • Hey man just wanted to tell you, I had some horrible experiences with Castrol ay! I would now rather use cooking oil in my car then that! Had it back in my XR6 and absalutly glued up my hydrolic lifters!

Just a warning bud from one V8 enthusiest to another.....

  • I use magnatec in my xr8 and it still makes the same noise! Been told that it is the pacemakers on it. My mates vx clubsport makes the same noise with pacemakers aswell!
