There are many POV / Air Text etc. project can use for this beamer. You have to make only a turning or swinging mirror and add laser pointers (obtain from keychains easily) instead of leds. Laser Pointers works at 4V5 without problems along many hours.

its very old project. It was produced 20 years ago.

I dont know where are you from but If your school still accept a final project like this than leave that school immediately. Becouse I did not educated at any electronic school and worked any eln.company. Just a curious man.

Text message using serial input? I don't program pics however I am somewhat familiar with the cnocept. Should be simple. You would need to use a bit banging async. serial input on one pin and very likely need to customize whatever you find to your timing that you use for scanning the lasers.
