This week US President Obama began the process of deciding the future strategy in the Afghan war. Dr Geoffrey Garrett; CEO of the United States Studies Centre, University of Sydney, says that Obama faces a double quagmire dealing with both strategy on the ground in Afghanistan and politics at home. Obama originally rose to prominence on his anti-Iraq stance. Garrett says Australia's action in the war remains an interesting question. He says the position appears to be that Australian troops will remain in Afghanistan for as long as possible. Garrett says Americans haven't been paying attention to the Afghan war and when attention shifts back to it they are unlikely to be supportive.
