AYZH - Technology Solutions for Women

Most innovations come with locally insensitive price tags neglecting and ignoring the needs and aspirations of remote micro-communities. This presents a huge opportunity for AYZH to work in the field of Innovation & Design for sustainability and makes a difference to these developing economies.

AYZH is looking through the eyes of women to identify the tools they want and need to help improve their standard of living. AYZH is committed to three core sectors that serve as the backbone of the economy in developing communities: Health, Water, and Agriculture. In an effort to understand these needs in a slum outside Chennai, India where we met a few women:

Our first product in the water sector is Sheba, an innovative, low-cost household water filter. AYZH is progressing successfully in its efforts to involve universities and companies in our process. We have support from D-Lab at MIT to provide time, space, and resources for testing and manufacturing prototypes. We also have support from a company called Sprig Toys, Inc., which has already started the process of re-designing. Our team will be visiting India in June- July 2009 to identify self help groups that can assemble the product locally. Further market research and prototype testing is contingent upon funding and we are confident of being able to start it in Fall 2009.
AYZH, a vision of Zubaida Bai that started out as a graduate school project at Colorado State University with the Global Social Sustainable Enterprise program. Zubaida is supported by Kellen McMartin, Janell Galindez & Patience Agana a team of passionate women out to make lives of poor women better through technology and entrepreneurship.
