I just figured this one out so it's still a little rough in places. Thanks for asking me to do this for you "stereojulie" always loved this song but never got round to finding a way to do it till you asked me to. It's a pretty unusual progression that's not too hard to play. can always count on tom waits for songs like this.

here are the chords:
[Bm] [G] [Bm] [G]
Broken glass, rusty nails [D] [A] [D] [F#]
where the wild violets grow [Bm] [G] [Bm] [G]
Say goodbye to the railroad, the mad dogs of summer [D] [F#] [Bm]
And everything that I know

chorus :

[G] [Bm]
What some men will do here for diamonds
[G] [Bm]
What some men will do here for gold
[G] [Bm]
They're wounded but they just keep on climbing
[G] [F#]
And sleep by the side of the road [Bm] [G] [Bm] [G]
There's a hole in the ladder, a fence we can climb
[D] [A] [D] [F#]
Mad as a hatter, you're thin as a dime [Bm] [G] [Bm] [G]
Go out to the meadow, the hills are a-green [D] [F#] [Bm]
Sing me a rainbow, steal me a dream

Small-time Napoleon's shattered his knees
But he stays in the saddle for Rose
And all his disciples, they shave in the gutter
And they gather what's left of his clothes

[G] [Bm]
What some men will do here for diamonds
[G] [Bm]
What some men will do here for gold
[G] [Bm]
They're wounded but they just keep on climbing
[G] [F#]
And sleep by the side of the road

  • myyoutube; thanks for the chord suggestions. don't really understand them from your note though. which bridge part are you talking about that goes Bm-Bm/Bb? i will go see if i can hear you doing this. do you have it posted?

  • I see some chord requests: here's what I use for the bridge chords: Bm - Bm/Bb - Bm - Em - (mad as...)Em - Bm -trick chord here on (thin as...) C#7/F (C#7b9 is also the right sound -X4343X low to high) - (dime...)F# . Slash chords just mean put the note after the slash in the bass. And I usually replace the G chord with G13 3X3000

  • @myyootube2 i just listened to your version. Cool version. You nailed those guitar bits. I've been using more standard chords to do this. I think the chords I've been using make my vocal reach more, which in my case, means some of those high notes get strangled, but it's tom waits, so i guess something needs to get strangled.

Here are the chords for the first verse part. Everybody knows them. see all chords in my more info box

    [Bm] [G] [Bm] [G]

    [D] [A] [D] [F#]

    [Bm] [G] [Bm] [G

    [D] [F#] [Bm]

  • This is a great version of this song.I don't know if it is exact, but it doesn't matter. You do this song justice, and it is a good listen either way. Keep it up.
