Definitely an odd way to start the day. UP's westbound, Michigan City coal empties roll through Joliet, on the former EJ&E Eastern Sub. 99.9% of the time, this runs with pure UP power. Not today. CN 5602 and IC 1034 are providing the horses today.
Right behind the coal empties was a light power move, from Matteson to Joliet. CN 5800 leads the way, followed by EJ&E 662, which is one of the two remaining J-Balls in service, along with 703.
Not far behind the light power move was M391. Here, it heads west, with a nice leader. CN SD40-2W 5279 is in charge, followed by a CN SD75I.
When M391 cleared in the yard, M390 got the call to go east. Here, it climbs the hill in Joliet, with a CN Dash 9 and an IC SD70. It can be heard receiving its track authority from East Frankfort, to CTC Robin.
UP's Michigan City coal loads were right behind M390, as the pair of UP GE's work hard to keep their train at a respectable speed, as they battle the hill, out of Joliet. The UP GE at the rear sure was creating a racket! You could hear that thing for miles.
So, Matt called and wanted me to see if 102 was in the BNSF Yard. It was. Quite a delightful consist, indeed! When I saw the EMD consist, I got on the interstate and headed to Mazon. I drove through some pretty intense rain on the way. I could barely see the car in front of me, at some spots. Matt joined me at Mazon. After about a half hour of nothing, we saw the westbound headlight. BNSF 2005, 6936, 6933 and 6763 highball through town. That Leslie RS3L sounds great. Good time, right here!
With nothing else happening, I headed for home. Matt called and told me that there was an eastbound approaching Mazon. I happened to be in between Coal City and Mazon, so I was in the perfect spot. It was an eastbound train, filled with nothing but John Deere combines. Never seen that before, so it was a pretty neat catch! A pair of BNSF Dash 9's lead the way, through the countryside.
In downtown Coal City, a trio of BNSF H2 Dash 9's lead a westbound stack train, by the local tavern.
I had hoped for an EMD consist on L CHI101, but I got a pair of B40-8W's. BNSF 504 and 514 highball through Pequot, in Coal City.
Filmed on 04/07/10.
It looked like a bad weather day, but great video. Catching a train of John Deere equipment is indeed an odd find!
