2012: Leaks Found in Earth's Magnetic Field

Scientists have found two large leaks in Earth's magnetosphere, the region around our planet that shields us from severe solar storms.

The leaks are defying many of scientists' previous ideas on how the interaction between Earth's magnetosphere and solar wind occurs: The leaks are in an unexpected location, let in solar particles in faster than expected and the whole interaction works in a manner that is completely the opposite of what scientists had thought.

The Y2K bug was taken seriously - and tons of money was spent fixing it. Of course, since nothing happened on 01/01/01 00:00, people assume the thing was just a hoax to keep ageing computer contractors in work. The correct outcome of the fix was that nothing should happen - which perhaps meant that some would have gamed it a bit, but all in all, it was a real problem. This EMP problem is also real, but the fix is far less glamourous - we need to re-develop reliable and efficient paper-based IT.

Here we go again with Mr. Kaku's bullshit predictions of what COULD happen. The only thing that is going to come of the solar flares are pretty lights in the sky over the North Eastern states. There will be no major interruption of services. Just like with Y2K, 2012 and 2013 will come and go without anything major happening. Michio Kaku is just trying to get his name out there.
