Goombay 2011
This year's Key West Goombay Festival has events throughout the calendar year (see schedule of events tab for details). The Key West Goombay Festival has a very rich history with roots that go all the back to Africa. The word goombay relates to the beating of drums and dance that goes along with it, that was brought to America through the Bahamas. Many of Key West's original Bahama Village residence are of Bahamian decent. So, it is only natural that many of the customs and traditions of that culture where brought to America with them and we continue to celebrate these traditions annually. In the past we have brought groups from the Bahamas that perform junkanoo music that is associated with Goombay such as the Baha Men and the Gully Rooster. This year we are planning to feature as many of the most popular entertainers from the Bahamas as the Bahamian government will allow to come to America and join them with Key West's own version of junkanoo music performed by our local junkanoo bands the Thunder From Down Under and the Key West Island Junkanoos.
