It's because when he's all clean shaven like that, he looks so young and innocent with his big adorable eyes that you instantly sympathize with him and want him to do well. That's ideal for a short but impactful part like this, where they want the audience to connect with him quickly.
Fine with me, he looks tasty in military garb.

He dose quite amazingly with the 1040's American accent. His real accent is a fairly thick Scottish one. It doesn't show though. Very awesome job. So sad he's character dies.:-( He looks mighty fine in that uniform. :-)

In Regeneration he played Anthony Balfour, a young solider who dies. In Atonement he played Robbie Turner-young solider who dies.
