A scene from the 1982 Rankin-Bass animated film "The Last Unicorn" in which King Haggard (Christopher Lee) explains the disappearance of the unicorns. This is one of my absolute favorite scenes from any film and the most memorable and beloved voice-over performances of my childhood. (Mind you, as a young girl I also grew up with Disney's "The Little Mermaid," so that's quite a feat, Mr. Lee.)

  • Haggard is such a brilliant antagonist - he's evil, and yet he's such a complex character at the same time. His speech is really moving and doesn't feel contrived at all - it makes his motivation, capturing the unicorns because they are the ONLY thing that makes him happy, ever, both disgusting and sympathetic - disgusting because he robs them of their freedom for himself, yet sympathetic because they provide him with fulfillment.

    Christopher Lee is THE MAN!

  • This is quite possibly the best villain speech ever created for American cinema. Love it!

  • This scene always confused me when I was a little girl. It still does-- but in a really satisfying way.

  • Her twitchy hair colour always irritated me.

  • Christopher Lee was already awesome the year I was born... That's something.

  • ...I like to watch them. They fill me with joy. ...The first time I felt it I thought I was going to die. I said to the Red Bull, "I must have them. I must have all of them, all there are, for nothing makes me happy, but their shining, and their grace."

  • Stalker old Man :P

  • Always been my favorite scene of the whole movie. I agree, the speech is POWERFUL.

  • Christopher Lee also spoke the german version of this film!

  • How can someone feel so unhappy that the first time they feel joy they believe they are dying? This broke my heart to pieces.

  • I hate haggard, but when he tells the story, I can't help but shed a tear for him.. Poor haggard, truly death was his only escape.

  • @TrettaM

King Haggard trapped them in the surf. They are the crest in the waves, ever galloping to land before receding, never reaching it.
