Whose garden was this
It must have been lovely
Did it have flowers
Ive seen pictures of flowers
And Id love to have smelled one

Whose river was this
You say it ran freely
Blue was its colour
And Ive seen blue in some pictures
And Id love to have been there

Tell me again, I need to know
The forest had trees, the meadows were green
The oceans were blue
And birds really flew
Can you swear that its true

Whose grey sky was this
Or was it a blue one
You say they were breezes
Ive heard records of breezes
And Id love to have felt one

Tell me again, I need to know
The forest had trees, the meadows were green
The oceans were blue
And birds really flew
Can you swear that its true

Whose garden was this
It must have been lovely
Did it have flowers
Ive seen pictures of flowers
And Id love to have smelled one

Tell me again, I need to know
Tell me again, I need to know
Tell me again, I need to know

  • There was an LP album with this name released in the late seventies... probably the only collection of sad songs from the usually sunshiny John Denver... Includes the Elinor Rigby song...

  • @MrSirrocco I have JD's version of Eleanor Rigby but Oh my goodness it sets my teeth off.. like the effects of a cold ice cream!!! But if anyone want to hear it do let me know

  • Thank you so much for uploading this! I have been looking everywhere for John Denver's version of the song. It's so moving, and even more relevant today than when it was released 40 years ago.

  • I couldn't agree more with you.

  • Jesus that took my breath away. there's a figure in the image earlier in the video and it made me jump. I could feel emotion of all sorts during that. To me i see it as a reminder that life passes and then its gone. it tells me to enjoy the time we have. It frightens me to think that it will surely end. So brilliant Catbrush. So sad too. FB

  • Tom Paxton released this song in 1969... 40 years ago.!!!!!! If only the powers that be had taken it on board then but no one wanted to know .... there was money to be made and who cared if there was a price to be paid later.

  • Serious assault on women, snatches out their light. Clever - John Denver

  • This song still gets to me, as I remember it at the end of SIlent Running, when the last forest silently sails off into space, cared for by the last of the three robots Bruce Derning had as his helpmates, huey, lewey and dewey
