@skankuser You are dead on. But, also, the part of his life he waisted on hatred, and because of hatred, which he can never get back. That's why he's looking at his reflection with no swastika. He wants to see what it's like when you start over again, the possibilities.

@BoxerUK94 I understand. We are all finding out what The Road to Hell really is and the most Incredible Thing about it is....we've all had a hand in building it.

@americaneagle2076 that comment is so true, this is a late reply I know but its unreal how true that is, I am British and extremely patriotic, tbh I am half racist and alot of our war veterans don't know what we fought for because now we have to put up with other cultures who are basically takin over our country whilst the white Brits are persecuted by the authorities, alot of dereks views in this movie make sense. I can't explain my views to ppl properly but nevermind.
The reason this scene always gets me is because it's so symbolic. You get in the shower everyday to clean yourself, yet, there's parts of him that he can never wash away. He'll always have a part of him that killed a man and part of his life dedicated to hatred, and he'll never get rid of it. The reflection in the mirror is his realization of this.
Very powerful movie.

What a film, what a lesson.... Edward Norton was robbed of the Academy Award and Furlong should have also been nominated at the very least. This is definitely one of those films you have to watch at least once in your life. Right up there with City Of God.
