Mothers Ruin was an 80s Hobart band formed by three founding members of Brisbane 70s band Railroad Gin. In 1987, singer Geoff worked on some Aids-prevention advice brochures for Tasmanian Health - and suggested the gist of the info would be more accessible to at-risk people if it was in a song and rock clip. As an example he and sax player Frank wrote "Rubber Up", and the band put it down the following day, with generous help from friends in the Hobart video and recording scene. The band felt it was important to undo the stigma surrounding condoms at the time - so made a big deal out of trivialising them in their demo clip. Rubber Up was presented to an Aids conference in Europe, played a little on Hobart community radio and tv, and aired a couple of times on Melbourne community tv.
