Ah, the lovely Emily Howell. Such a talented composer! Especially given that she is less than a year old. And cute as a button too. Or a switch. Seriously, though, for an amateur like myself, and based on this tiny sample, little Emily's music is far from bad.

David Cope is a horrible monster. He is a genius, I admire him, but he is a monster because his beautiful daughters are not open source.

Sorry Joop i disagree completely the patterns are repetitive and extremely obvious to someone who understands music, sure there are human compositions that are repetitive and obvious also, but take something relatively simple sounding like Beethoven's moonlight sonata, and Emily will fail. They are not there yet and far from it. Music is in the progression and development of the concept and when a good ear/brain hears the development pattern there is no enjoyment in it. Like a done b4 movie.

    lol.

But they already have poetry-writing machines. I'm sure they could just join them up.

Look up a book called "The Policeman's Beard is Half-Constructed".

On one hand, as a musician and composer myself I find it somewhat unsettling or unpleasant to imagine that a computer can create beautiful compositions. But on the other hand, this is still ultimately a human creation. The algorithms that went into creating this music were conceived and written entirely by humans. Ultimately, everything that you're hearing is the result of human action. And as a computer scientist, I can appreciate that... it's just really cool.
