It's fine to plant them, although they grow better out in the sun. There's another related plant in Ohio called wood nettles (Laportea canadensis) that likes growing under shade. Also, I always find stinging nettles near flowing water. Stinging nettles like very wet soil, very rich soil, and plenty of sunlight. It's unusual to find them away from water in nature, but they'll be very happy in a garden. Make sure the plants have stinging hairs (ouch) to verify you have nettles.

I live in Ohio on a 100-acre apple farm with a fair amount of woods and was surprised to find that stinging nettles do not grow here. So someone gave me some seeds and I put them in my garden. I have since transferred them to the woods and was wondering if this was a good idea as they are so prolific. so I called the County Extension office and they said it was fine, but were shocked that none were growing here beforehand. Do you all think it's okay to allow them to be in the woods ?Thanks
