What is this? Strange light beams in the sky - Montgomery County, PA

i was driving from quakertown (18951) to pennsburg (18073) and a friend and i noticed these streaks of light in the sky. when i got to my destination i noticed a big section of the sky was covered in these light rays. reminded me of aurora borealis but it was white light and wasn't all wavy. is it a meteor shower? or what is it???

when i filmed normally the sky was completely black. so i used night vision and then night vision with a slow shutter.

►►► UPDATE: so a bit after i uploaded this, i found that many people in the area had seen it. turns out it's thought to be some slightly rare phenomenon that occurs from ice crystals in the sky and lights on the ground. basically i think it's snowing in the distance and the light from shopping center parking lots somehow bounces around and reflects a beam upward into the sky. at the time i thought it was so strange because there didn't really seem to be too many clouds and i didn't see a beam leading down to the ground. another possibility is that it could have been the northern lights, it was said that at certain times there is a possibility for PA to be able to see them. i go w/ the shopping center lights though. it was a really beautiful and amazing thing to see. i wish i could have better captured it.. had to use night vision for anything to show up.

i saw this too! it was around 3am last sunday and i couldnt believe my eyes, i thought i was on crack haha. just as the coment below me mentioned, there were many and for a while it almost looked like it could have been northern lights.. but not quite. I'm from Winnipeg, Manitoba.

omg i just seen this tonight in sarnia, ontario, they were reddish coloured and then there were 2 laser like lights , so scary.

Glad I found this tonight. I just experienced this. I was standing on my condo patio looking out at the city, when I notice in the east sky maybe 30 or so beams of light in the sky. Straight up into the sy- but they all seemed to level off at the same point. I could tell that there were many more in the distance. Almost like rows of lights. I thought it was a UFO. couldnt be chem trails, It wasnt something man made. Really creeped me out. Thank you for the update. :) PS- Im in Toronto.

i saw these beams everywhere in sudbury ontario canada dec 2009 .. there were many diffrent ccolors and some were thicker only slightly..and some were alone some were close together.. very bright and eventually faded away ... my other friends didnt see them ..only i did..
