A PENSIONER whose Lakeland Terrier escaped from its home and bit a five-year-old boy on his face has been banned from keeping dogs for three years.
Frieda Laing, 67, was also fined £200 and ordered to pay £350 compensation at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday.

The court heard the youngster had been playing with his brother in the Mayfield area of Dalkeith when the dog attacked him.

arlier hearing, the court was told the boy was left with blood gushing from his face and was extremely frightened and screaming. He could be left with permanent scars.

The dog had escaped from Ms Laing's home on several occasions, and this time the garden gate was open.

The court heard she was "remorseful and contrite" and had the dog put down the same day.

Fiscal depute Sally Clark said: "The boy was playing outside with his brother when he saw a dog which he recognised as one from the neighbourhood and knew it was called Pip.

"The dog was seen to run towards the boy and jump up at him. It then bit him on his right cheek, causing deep open wounds and cuts to his mouth and face.

"His brother was frightened and tried to get the dog off but it ran away.

"Blood was gushing from his mouth and he was extremely shaken and was screaming."

Ms Clark said the youngster's mother came out, put a towel on his wounds and called an ambulance.

She added that the boy was left with four wounds, one to his upper lip, two beside his upper lip and one to his nose. He was taken to hospital and had surgery.

Police officers spoke to Laing and heard the dog had escaped from her home on several occasions.

She told them the dog had returned to the house 20 minutes later and also said she wanted the dog put down.

Laing admitted being the owner of a dangerously out-of-control dog that bit a child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, leaving him severely injured. The offence happened on 19 May this year.

Sentence had been deferred on Laing, of Carrick Crescent, Dalkeith, for background reports.

Sheriff Neil MacKinnon told Laing: "This is a serious matter but I am impressed by the remorse you have expressed."

  • What is the point of this video? Are you a reporter, were you once attacked by a 12 pound dog that you couldn’t fend off and this is your big YouTube chance to get back canines? Are you an advocate for cats, birds or fish perhaps? I’m still unclear what the point of this video is… oh yah, if you are a reporter, I would suggest that you take some vocal classes and or English classes… might help with your lackluster enunciation and ability to read a script.

  • @JonnyBuzzkill Yep, you got me. A 12 pound dog attacked me. Oh ya, next time you stop off at Pala, say hi to all the drunk rez people for me. I sure do miss them.

  • Uhh, you know Lakelands average 14-17 pounds, right? How did that pussy-ass 5-year-old not manage to deal with a dog that weighed 1/3 of what he did?

  • @AeonsOfFrost "pussy-ass" 5 yr old???????? what the hell is YOUR problem?

  • Why is this being posted as a YouTube video????

  • terriers are smarter than most humans

  • wow you all have really good lakeland terriers. Every lakeland I've owned is insane in some way. I hade to get stictches in my lap from my old lakeland biting me (in our defense, I was in second grade and I was bothering her). Still this is pretty intense. And I do love these dogs

  • Why is this a video!?!? You might as well post about people crashing in airplanes and how awful that is. Or maybe someone who slips and dies in their bathroom. Shit happens dude. It's called life. Dogs bite people sometimes, just like sometimes people crash their cars on accident. Should you post videos bashing cars everywhere because accidents happen? NO. This video is pointless and stupid.

  • @AeonsOfFrost have you seen the speed of small terriers when they rampaging, plus small dogs have sharp teeth, big ones blunt teeth

  • i have a lakeland terrier and he is the friendliest dog ive ever met. perhaps it was some other terrier. this dog is very light and small, a toddler could stomp it.please...

  • I have had terriers for years and the kid must have instigated the dog.. I can guarantee the dog did not "attack" just because

  • @FUzupf You missed the point of my comment - it was a rhetorical question intended to prove that your story is complete bullshit.
