Breaking News 16 September 2010
Prime Minister David Thompson's personal physician, Dr Richard Ishmael announced to the nation just a short while ago that the leader has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Ishmael in a statement at 11 a.m. said Thompson's diagnoses was confirmed in August during his second visit to a New York hospital.

At that time, he said, the decision was made to use medication and chemotherapy to shrink the tumor after which surgery was to be scheduled. Ishmael said the Prime Minister was responding to the medication and treatments.

He said that just recently, after returning to Barbados where he held a series of Cabinet meetings, Thompson developed serious abdominal pain with vomiting and doctors recommended he return to New York.

TUBEFLASH May 16 2010
PRIME MINISTER DAVID THOMPSON is ailing and in recent weeks, has undergone tests in Barbados and New York to identify the cause of the illness.

Thompson announced this today at a media briefing at his official Ilaro Court residence, saying that over the next two weeks, Barbadians should know definitively what is the nature and extent of his condition.

Thompson said that since early March he had been suffering with stomach pains that led to consultations with his personal physician Dr Richard Ishmael.

He revealed he had undergone tests in Barbados and had also travelled with Ishmael to New York where additional tests were carried out.

Thompson, who has noticeably lost weight, added the process was such that some of the initial tests and others were going to continue and it might necessitate him being out of the country over the next month or so for a longer period than would normally be the case.

He said the usual arrangements with respect to his absence would be put in place, with Attorney General Freundel Stuart serving in his absence.

Ishmael, who was also at the press conference, said that after some preliminary tests when Thompson contacted him about four weeks ago, he decided it was best to take him to see a specialist at the New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Ishmael noted that we do not have a concrete diagnosis yet" and that the Prime Minister will return to New York next week for additional tests.

He said that a definitive diagnosis should become available "within another two weeks or so".

Thompson pointed out that at that stage whatever information is necessary would be made available.
