To declare independence from Great Britain or not was the question, but first they had to decide whether they would even debate it. For all intents and purposes they were already at war, and declaring independence was only a formality. But to not declare would mean the slow death of their cause—that every man can make himself.

Would these men risk it all for liberty? Would they, as Jefferson would later write, pledge their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor? Or would they waffle and debate as General Washington fought the British with his ragtag army hoping against all odds to secure a victory against the most powerful empire in the world?

In the end they did the right thing, they voted to declare us an independent nation. With that one vote they set in motion the betterment of mankind, for with the rise of the American tide of liberty, the liberty of all the world would rise as well. Without what these men started back then, the world would be a much darker place today.

  • @USMCmazac Oh, the declaration says everything it needs to! "That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles" We just need to start acting upon it. :)
