Builders loved popcorn ceilings because of all the imperfections the popcorn could hide. Plan on doing some prep work to flatten the nail holes and hide tape lines. Next you should prime, texture and paint the ceiling.

Using that pan to catch the droppings is brilliant! I have more work to do, but since I have a pan very much like that one, you can bet that I will be using it!
