Cyclist takes a spill on the railroad tracks on the eastern approach to the Tomlinson Bridge on Forbes Ave/Route 1 during a Critical Mass ride in New Haven, Conn. on 09/25/2009. Despite the protests of hundreds of local residents, ConnDOT has taken no action to make the crossing safe for cyclists, other than to post a sign of a toppling cyclist next to the east-bound lane of the bridge.
viewers may wonder why a group of cyclists is pulling so far to the left as they negotiate this angled crossing. The crossing curves as it traverses Forbes Avenue. The westbound lanes are far safer to traverse than the steeply angled wheel-catching rails on the east bound side. To those of you whose first reaction is "serves those cyclists right," imagine your daughter riding to class at Yale or a group of 11 year old boys riding to buy hats or whatever in town. Now picture LOTS of traffic
