Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County hosted a special edition of its Consumer Issues Program on Tuesday, October 5, 2010. Two topics were addressed. In the first segment, representatives of local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs discussed the value of the federal and state Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) as they apply to income tax returns for income eligible workers. They also shared information about the opportunities for free income tax return preparation in Tompkins County. Presenters were Lilly Hartman, Director of RSVP Tompkins County Tax Counseling for the Elderly, and Brian Zapf, Community Tax Program Director at Alternatives Credit Union's VITA program. In a second segment, Dennis McCabe, New York State Assistant Attorney General, provided an update on Consumer Scams targeting persons with disabilities and how to avoid becoming a victim.

This free presentation was funded by a special grant from New York State United Way as part of the New York Makes Work Pay initiative. This program was videotaped for broadcast following our regular Consumer Issues Broadcast on Mondays in January and February 2011 at 7:00am, 1:00pm, and 7:00pm on Cable Channel 15, and also is available on YouTube
