Over a thousand years ago, Europe experienced one of its greatest periods of cultural enlightenment.

For more than three centuries in Medieval Spain, Muslims, Jews and Christians lived together and prospered in a thriving multicultural civilization. Here, remarkable individuals of different faiths made lasting contributions in such areas as poetry, art, architecture, music, dining etiquette, science, agriculture, medicine, engineering, navigation, textiles, and even hydraulic technology.

Their rich, complex culture reached a high point in the Mediterranean Middle Ages. However, larger forces in conquest of land and power brought about puritanical judgments, absolutism and religious extremism. The conflict they triggered extinguished the shared learning that once flourished in this enlightened land.

This is the story of Al-Andalus.

לפני אלף שנים אירופה חוותה את אחת מתקופות הזוהר של נאורות תרבותית, עידן זה נקרא בתולדות העם היהודי תור הזהב של ספרד.

במשך יותר משלוש מאות שנים בספרד של ימי הביניים, מוסלמים, יהודים ונוצרים חיו יחד ושגשגו בתרבות רב גוונית ורב לאומית. שם, אנשים יוצאי דופן מאמונות שונות הכניסו תרומות עצומות לאנושות של שירה, אמנות, ארכיטקטורה, מוסיקה, מדע, חקלאות, רפואה, הנדסה, ניווט, שריגה ואפילו טכנולוגיה הידראולית.

תרבותם העשירה והמורכבת של תושבי אנדלוסיה הגיעה לשיא בימי הביניים. למרות ההצלחה, כוחות גדולים שחיפשו שליטה וכוח הביאו איתם דיני טוהרה ופונדמנטליות, אבסולוטיות וקיצוניות דתית. הקונפליקט שכוחות אלה יצרו השמיד את הסביבה העשירה לייצור ידע שפעם פרחה באדמה נאורה זו.

זוהי ההיסטוריה של אלאנדלוס - תור הזהב של ספרד.

I wonder why 805 years of Islamic Spain never reaches the history books? America is less than 300 years old and 800 years is not a joke. I wonder why...

Its kinda ironic and sad,..when the roman empire fell ultimately in the 15th century(eastern half,otherwise known as "the byzantine empire",a coined term)

the arabs preserved our architectoral arts and much other knowledge,when we emerged from the dark ages wegot this back(by the sword in many cases)..now the muslim world are going trough their own dark ages..,may our muslim brothers recover from it soon,I was 12 months deployed to ISAF so dont do the "tell that to the troops" routine:P

The reason for crusades was dhimmitude? LOL

nobody in Europe knew anything about muslims, who were much more advanced than retarded Europe of the Middle Ages. Crusaders is one of the most violent, brutal and bloodthirsty campaigns, except perhaps this of Timur.
