Shocking images of devastation left in Guatemala after an eruption of the Pacaya Volcano in 2010 was followed the very next day by a direct hit by Tropical Storm Agatha. Hundreds were killed, hundreds of thousands lost their home, and a massive sinkhole of yet disputed origin swallowed a three-story building in Zona 2, a populous area in Guatemala City. In these pictures you can see damages at places such as Palin, Amatitlan, San Vicente Pacaya, Puerto de San Jose and Guatemala City, where La Aurora International Airport had to close for 5 days due to the volcanic ash rain, that covered the entire city and almost 50% of the entire country. Music in the background is the song "El Sol Esperara" (The Sun Is Gonna Wait) by Guatemalan songwriter Shery, which talks about hope and the will to raise from the ashes.
I was there during all of it for a study abroad course, our group climbed Pacaya moments before it erupted. We lived with some of the families affected by the mudslides near Antigua. So being there on the trip during all of that was such an eye opening experience.
